Travel Nursing Combines Two Passions

Hidden Beauty in Unexpected Places

Growing up in Georgia, Kayla A. always wanted to be a nurse. She went to nursing school straight out of high school and, five years ago, started working in an Adult and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma center.

Her other ambition, however, was to travel. Travel nursing offered an opportunity to combine both of her passions. After working with a few other companies, she quickly discovered TaleMed.

“With TaleMed, I had an immediate rapport with my recruiter Brittany,” Kayla says. “I really liked what the company had to offer.”

She signed on with TaleMed in late 2018. By spring 2019 she found herself at Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska’s largest hospital.

A Whole Other World

“As much as I’ve been around trauma, this was unique,” says Kayla. She dealt with several hiking injuries, four-wheeler accidents and bear maulings.

“And lots of moose stompings,” she says. “People try to take selfies with them. It’s crazy!”

In her free time, she loved to go hiking, too, but far away from the moose. She mostly stuck to hiking to and around glaciers, and there was also boat tours and lots of fishing. “Salmon spawn until September in Alaska, so there are large runs of fish,” she says. “Throw a line out and you’re likely guaranteed a catch!”

Trusting in TaleMed

Now she’s back in Atlanta for the fall. There are friends’ weddings and the holidays coming up, but she is looking forward to her next big trip. “Don’t be dead set on where you want to go at first,” she advises any new travel nursing professionals. “Random places turn out to be the best. There’s hidden beauty in unexpected places.”

She also advises that nurses stay up on their certifications. “TaleMed will help you with that,” Kayla explains. “They helped pay for my pediatric certification. They provide you the resources to better yourself.”
