A Positive Attitude in Health Care – Not a Choice, a Necessity

The Importance of a Positive Attitude

In any job your attitude is important, it governs your daily life and determines your outlook on everything you encounter. In our current economy, employers have a large pool of job seekers to choose from. Employers are looking for those with first rate skills and a positive personality to go along with it. Your knowledge may have landed you the job, but don’t underestimate the influence a good attitude and interpersonal skills have on that outcome.

Make a Positive Attitude a Requirement for Yourself

Attitude is vitally important in the healthcare field. As a nurse, your patients are affected by everything you do. This includes your attitude, and demeanor. You are a care giver, and the positive attitude you portray is infectious when it comes to patients. They will feel they are getting compassionate care from an individual who has their best interest in mind.

If you find yourself consistently in a bad mood or poor state of mind, it’s time to take a step back and examine the situation.

The first step is to determine what is causing your distress. Could it be that something at home is filtering into your work life; or is the issue at work itself?

  • Are you burnt out?
  • Is a situation at home transferring into your work life?
  • Do you have an issue with a specific co-worker?

Do your best to put these problems to rest. It is imperative that you have a healthy balance in your work/home life. Be sure to try and separate the two as best you can. If you are burnt out try floating to a different specialty or taking some personal days to decompress. Even a day of rest and relaxation can provide you with the jump start you need.

Pros of a Positive Attitude

RNs are the backbone of any healthcare facility. They touch every life that comes into the facility and it is imperative those patients receive the best care from the best people. A positive attitude can increase the consistency of high performance and guarantee patient satisfaction.

If a bad mood or funk is clouding your day there is a higher probability for mistakes. It is our duty as healthcare professionals to ensure we are of sound mind. Choosing a positive attitude is the best way to go about doing this.

Often times the best way to earn a good reputation and advance your career is through attitude. Those individuals who are confident in their ability to handle job stress more often than not have a good grip on approaching difficult situations they might encounter. Your attitude influences all areas of your day-to-day life and determines how well you handle stress.

At the end of the day we are each in control of our moods, it is up to us to choose to be positive. Regardless of what may be going on at home, or at work, we can choose to have a good attitude. Given the choice between an optimist and a pessimist, we will always align ourselves with the optimist.

In healthcare,  situations we find ourselves in are not always easy. So choose to be the optimist in every situation. Your attitude will be infectious and those surrounding you will be better because of it.
