How to Prepare for an Assignment: Licensure
The key to travel nursing is being prepared. The more prepared you are, the smoother the transition to your new travel nurse placement! So it’s important to apply for state licensure well in advance of a new travel assignment. For example, let’s say you’re interested in traveling to Durham, North Carolina—you know you like the city, the job market is up and coming and there’s plenty to do in your free time. Before you begin looking for a travel job in Durham, apply for your North Carolina state licensure (even before you submit an application for a position). Why? Because the licensing process can take two to three months or longer.
Two options for state licensure
To get licensed in North Carolina, or any other state, contact the state’s Board of Nursing. You’ll be able to get information about applying for a state license and any requirements that state may have. You may have the option for temporary or permanent licensure, though permanent licensure can save you time and hassles in the future—especially if you plan to make travel nursing your full time career.
You can also apply for a state licensure compact, depending on the state you’d like to travel to for nursing work. This multistate license gives you the ability to practice both in a home state you elect and any of 25 states that participate (including North Carolina).
To obtain licensure in a new state, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) advises you’ll need the following:
- Proof of education from an approved nursing program (graduation or eligibility for graduation)
- Proof of completion of the NCLEX-RN exam
- A criminal background check (required by some states)
Certain states may also require a notarized copy of your birth certificate and/or nursing license, passport photos or proof of prerequisite contact hours.
