Travel Nurses: Have fun AND save money while on assignment

5 Ways to Save Money on Assignment and Still have a Blast

You’re a travel nurse in a new city and you want to make the most of it without breaking the bank in the process. Life “on the road” can be a hugely exciting way to gain valuable work experience while making great money. However, it can also be challenging when it comes to making smart decisions on how and where you spend your hard-earned money. So how do you save money on your assignments yet still have a blast?

At TaleMed, we want to send you on an adventure, but we also want to make sure you’re well-prepared. Here is a list of five innovative ways to save money and still have an incredible time at every location.

Five Paths to Budget-Friendly Fun

  1. Use the “Six-Block Rule” when eating out
In every new city, food is a big part of the fun and an easy way to get a taste (pun intended) of what the city and surrounding area has to offer! A common rule of thumb for any budget-conscious food connoisseur to follow is to never eat less than six blocks away from a tourist site. The food at tourist hot spots can be twice as expensive and often times not as tasty as a local food spot several miles away.
  1. Look for groups, activities, and events posted on Facebook that match your interests
Facebook can be a handy tool for finding activities in the area. Facebook takes your likes and interests from your profile and displays events that might interest you. Most of these events are either free or have a low cost to attend. And better yet, it’s a great way to meet people in the area that share similar interests.
  1. Take advantage of your credit card company’s reward system
Most major credit card companies offer reward programs. This allows you to buy great things like gas, food and airline tickets and save a little money while you’re at it. Rewards programs offer things like free flight mileage for every purchase and/or savings on hotel rooms while getting complimentary upgrades. All of these are perfect for a traveler like yourself! Take some time to look into any credit card programs that might be available to you.
  1. Less stuff, less stress!
When on assignment, it’s best to pack light. In fact, less stuff is said to relieve stress. When flying, the price of carry-ons tends to rack up the total travel cost and having to ship your remaining items to every location can do much the same. Figure out your essentials and stick with those. Forget something? No problem! Consider it an opportunity to spend a day exploring local shops with a purpose!
  1. Talk to the locals
Hands down, locals are your best resource and not just for directions. These people not only know the ins and outs of every street corner, but they can also provide tidbits of information that could save you money. From weekend entertainment to the best grocery store for your dollar, they can fill you in on what’s worth spending money on.

Consider it “intentional adventure”

Saving money doesn’t have to put a damper on your plans for fun! With a little planning and “recreational” research, your next assignment can add valuable experience to your resume, money to your bank account and memories that will last forever.
